Happy Easter

Easter is an awesome time, in fact for Christians it should be the greatest time of celebration, because it is when we recognize the endless gifts given to us by the Father and the Son. Unfortunately it is far from the largest holiday and even gives what to a night of evil, sin, and temptation.

During the last few days of Jesus’ life before he was crucified He showed us many things. On His trip into Jerusalem He bypassed the opportunities for the praise and pats on the back and when directly to right the wrongs that were taking place. An when He went into the temple that had been turned into a market place he was not passive but voice directly the wrongs that were taking place, even taking physical action. During the last supper He showed us how as believers we are to unit in Him and He also showed us that in serving Him and tending His sheep there is no task we should not be willing to perform; as He stooped down to wash the feet of His disciples. We also saw Him endure immeasurable suffer in our name and even though He could have taken the easy way out, He chose to Die on the Cross for each of us.

From His Death and Resurrection have come many benefits for us, not just forgiveness to those who repent, but much more.

NEW COVENANT/RECONCILIATION: We are at peace with God. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He made it possible for us to be reconciled to God and restored to fellowship with Him by faith in Christ. God makes a new covenant with His people. “For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance-now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.” Heb 9:15

JUSTIFICATION: We are declared right before God. When Jesus Christ died, He absorbed our punishment. Therefore, when we believe in Him, our sins are no longer held against us. But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Rom 3:21-25

REDEMPTION: We are ransomed from our sin and condemnation. The death of Christ also means we have been bought out of bondage to sin and Satan. The ransom price for our sin has been paid in full. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matt 20:26-28

FREE: We are free from God's wrath. This is possible because an acceptable offering has been made on our behalf. The offering has been made to appease God, to turn His wrath from us. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Heb 2:17-18

Be Close/Part of Him - HOLY COMMUNION: This gives us the opportunity to be closer to Jesus each time we partake of His body and blood. What a gift, one that we can and should receive as often as possible. The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."  In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."  For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Cor 11:23-26

The bottom line is this, Easter is NOT about a bunny, chicks, eggs, hunts for candy, or baskets magically placed in the home of children, it is about OUR Salvation, OUR Eternal Life, AND where we will spend that eternal life – Smoking or Non-Smoking. Those who do not believe in Jesus worry about one thing more than anything else, the possibility of the Eternal Life. For them, if this is true, if will mean an eternity of misery and that scares them. A fellow skeptic once asked the famous atheist Voltaire if he would speak some words of comfort to a friend who was dying. Voltaire responded, "I don’t think I can do that. The thought that there might really be a hell plagues me continually." In fact many atheist; upon taking their last few breaths have seen that Jesus is for real and have commented on what a mistake they had made:

The English atheist Thomas Hobbes said, "I am taking a fearful leap into the dark!"

The French infidel Voltaire cried out, "I am abandoned by God and man; I shall go to hell!"

Sir Francis Newport wailed in anguish, "Oh, eternity, eternity forever and forever! Oh, the insufferable pangs of hell!"

What a sobering contrast to the last words of people who knew and loved Christ as their Lord and Savior. Like Dwight L. Moody who said, "This is glorious! Earth recedes; heaven is opening; God is calling me!"

Sir David Brewster declared, "I will see Jesus--see Him as He is. I have had the light for many years. Oh, how bright it is! I feel so safe, so satisfied!"

And these words from a man being burned at the stake: "Blessed be the time that ever I was born for this day. We shall not lose our lives in this fire," he said to his fellow martyrs, "but only change them for something better."

Easter means everything to us and should be a holiday celebrated for more than a day and should be a celebration that in compasses all that it means. Many celebrate Lent and Holy week to lead up to the excitement of Easter Day and keep it going through Pentecost. Let us all be these kinds of people growing in excitement of Jesus, not of the commercialism that has leeched itself to the day. Let your cross be carried highly and proudly for without Jesus and the Cross there would be no Easter, no Salvation, and no Heaven for most everyone. And if you sit passively thinking you have your baptism certificate and confirmation certificate so you are just waiting to go to heaven let me leave you with a few thoughts that will hopefully get you up out of that chair and serving the Lord in some way every day.

First, if Jesus was to come today, He would mark 144,000 faithful followers with His mark to go out during the Last Days and to witness for Him. Would you be one of them? "Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God." Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel. Rev 7:2-4

Second, we are often taught that you cannot earn your way to heaven; it is by the Grace of Jesus you may enter. This is true in the since you cannot simply not believe and do an action or pay a tithing to enter heaven, but First you must believe and have faith, but to sit back and do nothing will not necessarily get you through the gate of heaven; Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that — and shudder. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. James 2:18-26

Third the way to heaven is not the eight lane super highway you may think it is. Jesus tells us many times that there are two gates a wide one and a very narrow one through which few will enter. Some of us may be fooling ourselves if we think we have reservations. "Enter through the narrow gate . For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Matt 7:13-14

Finally, many who think they are going to heaven will not. In fact many teachers, pastors who have worked hard their whole lives will fall short of the glory of heaven because they will fall to temptations, evil, and probably the most common, Pride. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Cor 9:24-27

Strive every day to walk the path Jesus has put before you, not a stroll on Sunday, but an ongoing journey that never stops to rest. Work to be as close to Him as possible and deny all things but Jesus, less you never forget that the gate is narrow and few will find it.
